Character Q&A: Daniella – One Plus One Equals Three

Character Interview Tear Sheet
Character: Daniella
Book/Short Story: One Plus One Equals Three
Inspired By A Real Person: Yes, someone named Daniella

Q: Daniella, welcome. Please, state your relationship with Kaitlyn.
A: I don’t really know her all that well, actually. I would run into her from time to time at the bank and we were friendly and that was it. We were not, are not close. In fact, I had completely lost touch with her because she stopped coming into the bank. It was the only time I saw her.

Q: Were you surprised when you turned up as a character in One Plus One Equals Three?
A: Oh yeah. No doubt. I didn’t even know she was a writer.

Q: Now that you are, what do you think?
A: Oh, I like it. A lot. Nicole and I go way back and we both liked Brady and were hoping he would ask one of us out. Nicole is pretty foxy and, of course, is stuck up about it and she was sure it was going to be her. Brady, though, has scoped me out pretty good – I’ve got humongous bazoongas and I’m plump but not fat and he likes that I can tell – and we have some things in common and I thought it would be me. We’re both pretty funny together.

Q: You’ve known Nicole for a long time, haven’t you?
A: Yes, we are old friends. We met in second grade at Sweet Mother of Christ Catholic School and went through high school together. We were probably never BFFs as they’re called now, but like all friends we’ve had our ups and downs and it’s nice working together at the bank.

Q: Brady, of course, ended up asking both of you out at the same time. Did that surprise you?
A: No. Not at all. It should have, of course. One boy going out with two girls on one date isn’t normal but normal is boring. You wanna know the truth?

Q: Sure…
A: I was actually hoping he would.

Q: Really?
A: Nodding. Yes. I thought it seemed, well, natural.

Q: Did your family life growing up foster this?
A: Oh, God know. Are you kidding? I’m Mexican. Nothing in the Mexican culture prepares you for this. You get married, then you move out of the house and have an army of kids and you raise your kids and you go from being a senorita to a senora to a vieja. You pass your life.  You do not date another girl and another man at the same time, though I don’t suppose you do that in any culture.

Q: Merely passing your life doesn’t appeal to you?
A: Well, yes, I do want kids and a family, of course. I’m not a complete rebel. But on the other hand, no. Everybody has that and maybe I don’t want everything everyone else has.’

Q: So you’re open to being part of a threesome couple?
A: Well, as Part I ends Brady is picking us for our first date together, so who knows?

Q: The first date…Nicole was a wreck. You were the voice of reason.
A: Well, as reasonable as two girls getting ready for a date with the same guy can get. Nicole has always been a drama queen. Don’t doubt that. A pretty funny drama queen, but a drama queen nonetheless.

Q: But she didn’t really want to go it seems like…
A: Don’t kid yourself. If she didn’t really want to go she would not have had me over to her apartment so we could get ready together. She liked Brady as much as I did and we’ve known each other for almost 20 years. She wanted to go, but she’s pretty funny and enjoys putting on a show and I’ve always been a good audience for her.

Q: You really weren’t surprised when Brady asked you both out at the same time for the same date?
A: Me no, but I think Nicole was genuinely surprised. I think that right up until that moment in the vault she thought she was going to be the one asked out the only question, for her, was when it would happen. But a girl senses these things. The concept of a boy asking two girls out for the same date is so far out there though, that you can’t really expect it, but I suspected it would be the case. One, Nicole is stunningly hot and guys like that. Two, I am pretty, too, and far better conversation than Nicole, who’s no dummy. Brady appreciates both of us so, no, I wasn’t surprised.

Q: What emotions did you feel when he asked you both out?
A: Shakes her head. Nothing out of the ordinary, really. My heart didn’t leap and my stomach didn’t freeze. It felt like this was exactly what should be happening in my life, our lives, right now and there is no reason to get worked up over that.

Q: You still live at home. What did you tell your parents?
A: The truth, silly. I told them I was going to go out with Nicole, which we’ve been doing for years anyway.

Q: If you three start something long-term there’s going to come a time…
A: Quitely: I know. Daniella looks down here for a second or two before looking back up. It won’t be easy, but we will jump off that bridge when we get to it.

Q: Only part one of the story has been released. What’s going to happen the rest of the way?
A: Ha! I can’t tell you that! Kaitlyn does not write for the young adult crowd, though, so it will probably be naughty. And funny.
